THROUGH 0115Z JANUARY 21, 2009

California:
A heavy smoke plume this evening was spotted in northern Santa Barbara
County moving to the north into San Luis Obispo County. The plume is
still active, and currently extends 100km out from the source.

Texas:
In southern San Augustine County, a moderately dense smoke earlier
this evening was observed moving to the south into Jasper County, and
extending at least 75km from the source. Other light smoke plumes were
also seen moving to the south and southeast.

Louisiana:
A moderately to heavy dense smoke plume in Rapides County extends to
the south, all the way to the Gulf Coast into Vermilion County. Other
much lighter smoke plumes were spotted as well moving to the south,
extending out between 50-75km from their sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
