DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z JANUARY 22, 2009

East Texas:
Along the border of Jasper and Angelina counties, a moderately dense
to heavy dense smoke plume was observed moving to the northeast into
western Louisiana, specifically into Sabine County. The plume fanned
out at least 100km from the source of the fire.

Louisiana:
In Vernon County, a moderately dense smoke plume was seen moving to
the northeast into Winn County. Also, in far northwest Winn County,
a moderately dense to heavy dense smoke plume extended northeast into
Union County.

Southeast US:
Numerous prescribed burns occurred this afternoon. These burns produced
light smoke plumes across the southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
