DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z APRIL 27, 2009

Western Gulf of Mexico:
Earlier Today:
The numerous fires burning across the Yucatan Peninsula and central
Mexico have produced a large area of thin to moderate density smoke that
extends over much of the Bay of Campeche and the western Gulf of Mexico
to around 27N.

The smoke continue to move N from the fires burning in the above mentioned
region, but based on current satellite imagery smoke is not reaching
the Gulf Coast states.

South Florida:
The wildfire in central Collier county is now producing pockets of
moderately dense to dense smoke moving west into the Gulf of Mexico.
The outer edges of the smoke is mostly thin in density. Smoke extends
out 250 km to 270 km from source.

Arizona:
A fire on the border of Yavapai and Coconino counties S of Flagstaff and
near the town of Sedona is producing light to moderately dense smoke
east into Apache and Navajo county. Smoke extends east 200 km to 220
km from source.

Northwest Mexico/Gulf of California/SE New Mexico/W Texas:
A thin line of dust is moving east SE across the region just behind
the front moving through the central US. The area of dust extends SW
into the Gulf of California and into the central/southern sections of
Baja California.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
