DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z May 23, 2009
Northern Plains/South Central Canada: A large number of fires were detected over the Northern Plains states of eastern South Dakota/eastern North Dakota and Minnesota this afternoon and evening but smoke analysis was largely hindered by clouds from approaching weather system. A smaller number of fires were detected over the Canadian Provinces of southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. Most of the smoke plumes with these fires were thin and were extending off to the southeast. Montana: A complex of fires was detected over northern Lincoln county in northwest Montana. The fires combined to produce a moderately dense smoke plume that extended north across the US/Canadian border. Oregon: A fire just east of Crater Lake in Klamath county in southwest Oregon was producing a moderately dense smoke plume that extended northeast into portions of western Crook county. Hanna THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
