DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z June 3, 2009

South Central Canada to North Central US:
A large area of aerosol of unknown origin and composition was still
observed early this morning in visible imagery. The aerosol extended
from Saskatchewan eastward to southern Ontario Province, northern
Montana, North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and
Northern Michigan. It is possible that some detached smoke from larger
fires burning in southeastern Alaska, west central Yukon Province in
northwestern Canada, and southwestern British Columbia Province in
southwestern Canada may be contributing to the aerosol. For additional
graphical information on the large smoke plumes emanating from these
fires as well as new large plumes originating from fires burning in
southwestern Alberta Province, please refer to the links below.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
