DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z June 4, 2009

Yukon to South Central Canada and North Central United States:
A large area of smoke that appeared to originate from wildfires over the
Yukon and northern British Columbia extended from their sources southeast
through much of Alberta and Saskatchewan and into southern Manitoba
and then into North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and
northern Michigan.

Southern Alberta/Southern British Columbia/Northern Washington
A number of wildfires near the vicinity of Calgary, with the most
noteworthy about 80 miles NNW of Banff, have combined to produce an
extremely large and dense smoke plume that covered a good portion of
southwest Alberta along with most of southern British Columbia and
extreme northern Washington.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
