DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1815Z June 22, 2009

Ontario/Quebec:
An area of thin to moderately dense smoke extended from southeastern
Ontario county through central Quebec.  This smoke is likely associated
with the fire activity on the eastern shore of James Bay.

New Mexico:
An area of moderately dense smoke was detected over southeastern Catron
county, extreme northern Grant county and northwestern Sierra county.
This area of smoke was associated with fires in the Black Mountain Range
and also in the Gila National Forest.  Some very thin smoke was also
detected over northwestern New Mexico near and southeast of Farmington
that is also believed to have originated from fires over southwestern
New Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
