DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1345Z June 27, 2009

Plains/Mississippi Valley/Southeast US:
Light haze and possible light smoke as well is centered over most of
Texas, Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and
southern Illinois.

Eastern Canada/Western New England:
A band of smoke through Quebec and Ontario is drifting to the east in
morning vis, and extends down into New York state.

SO2 across the Western US:
An area of SO2 extends from eastern California/western Nevada NNE into
eastern regions of Washington and Oregon, across western Montana and
into British Columbia. Another SO2 band is situated over Wyoming and
eastern Montana.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
