DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1640Z July 6, 2009

Alaska/NW Canada:
Large amounts of residual light smoke from large fires across most of
Alaska and the Yukon territory cover the eastern region of the state,
extending south and east into the Yukon territory, and moving to the
southeast in general.

Northwest US:
A large amount of residual light smoke from wildfires in California and
Oregon is drifting to the east. The smoke covers northern California,
east-central Oregon, southern Idaho, southwest Montana, and western
Wyoming.

Plains:
A thin band of SO2 extends to the southeast through southern South Dakota
and Nebraska before dissipating.

Arizona:
A small patch of residual light smoke can be seen moving east through
the central region of the state.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
