DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1400Z July 10, 2009

Canada:
The southern half of the Northwest Territories as well as northern
Alberta and Saskatchewan are covered by a haze which is likely remnant
smoke from the fires in Alaska over the last few days.  A denser area
of haze covers the northwestern coast of British Columbia.  This areas
density is due to the proximity to the fires in Alaska.

SO2:
A thin stream of haze moving west to east extends from Washington,
through northern Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and into southern Manitoba
and Ontario.  This appears to be remnant SO2 and other aerosols from
the continuing eruption of Sarychev-Peak.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
