DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z September 9, 2009

Minnesota/west Ontario/Manitoba:
A light haze was seen along the back edge of mid-level clouds associated
with a frontal boundary that stretched from western Hudson's Bay to
Minnesota and the Dakotas. This haze was only about 90 miles wide but was
observed from northwest Minnesota northward along the Ontario/Manitoba
border before turning northwest across northeast Manitoba into extreme
southeastern Nunavut.

Ontario/Quebec/Great Lakes Region:
Another area of light haze mixed with thin smoke was seen this morning
moving eastward across eastern Ontario, southern Hudson's Bay, and
northwestern Quebec. Over the western Great Lakes, the surrounding states
of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and even parts of Minnesota,
Iowa, and Missouri, the thin smoke and light haze mixture was moving more
in a north to northeastward direction towards southern Canada. Most of
this remnant smoke/haze is believed to be from the fires in BC several
days ago.

Oklahoma/Texas/Arkansas/Mississippi:
A hazy area of aerosol extended eastsoutheastward along the Texas/Oklahoma
border to northwest Mississippi this morning and was also observed in
the GOES Aerosol/Smoke Product (GASP). It could determined however if
this haze was remnant smoke that had drifted eastward from southern
California or if it may just be other aerosols.

can be found at the locations listed below.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
