DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 26, 2009

Western and Central U.S./Southern Canada:
A very large area of mainly thin smoke was visible this morning across
portions of the Southwest, the central Rockies, the central and northern
Plains, and southern Canada from Alberta Province to southern Hudson
Bay. This smoke was leftover from a number of fires burning in the
western U.S. as well as southern British Columbia Province in southwestern
Canada. The largest smoke producing fires appeared to be in northwestern
Wyoming, southwestern and northeastern Oregon, south central Washington,
and southern British Columbia. Another much smaller detached patch of
leftover smoke was observed moving eastward across northeastern Oregon
and central Idaho.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
