DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z March 15, 2010

Just over a dozen fires with visible smoke in satellite imagery were
analyzed primarily across the south central U.S. Details concerning the
plumes and the fires they originated from can be found by referring to
the graphical links listed below. Also, strong northeasterly winds were
noted blowing across the northern Texas panhandle and eastern New Mexico
while gusty westerly winds were observed over southern New Mexico and
far western Texas. Despite these areas being favorable for generating
blowing dust/sand, no blowing dust or sand could be detected in visible
satellite imagery through the early evening. Some cloudiness in the
region though may have prevented the detection of blowing dust.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
