DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0345Z August 08, 2010

Central Canada/Southern Quebec and Ontario/Pacific Northwest/Northern
Tier US/Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Mid Atlantic/East Coast US:

An expansive area of smoke spreads across central Canada from north to
south and across the northern tier US and east toward the eastern US
coast. Another pocket moves east northeast across the Pacific Northwest
and combines with smoke from central Canada fires. Individual pockets
of moderately dense to dense smoke extend everywhere across the overall
smoke. A dense pocket extends from northern Alberta into the western
Northwest Territories and then southeast over NW Saskatchewan, central
Manitoba into west central Ontario. Another dense pocket lies over
southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and just over the border into northern
Montana. Moderately dense pockets extend across northern California,
southeast Oregon, into central Idaho. Another area spreads over a large
section of Alberta, Northwest Territories and across northern Saskatchewan
and then southeast over Manitoba into southern Ontario. This pocket
also moves south over the border area of Alberta and Saskatchewan and
into northern Montana and Idaho. One final pocket of moderately dense
to dense smoke stretches over southeast Ontario just north of Lake Huron.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
