DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z October 3, 2010

Montana/Alberta:
This evenings satellite imagery showed an area of light to moderate
density smoke moving east along the Montana and Saskatchewan border.
The source of this smoke is likely the fire activity along the
Idaho/Montana border.

Louisiana/Gulf of Mexico:
Although the organized plume of light smoke that was evident on morning
satellite imagery over the Western Gulf of Mexico has become much less
evident on evening satellite imagery, individual smoke plumes from fire
activity over southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas were drifting out
into the northwest Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
