DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z October 10, 2010

Middle to Lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast:
Remnant smoke from the large number of agricultural burns over the region
was seen over the Missouri Bootheel, eastern Arkansas, much of Louisiana,
western Tennessee and much of Mississippi. The smoke was mainly light,
although a narrow plume of moderate density smoke was seen from a
multi-day fire in southwest Louisiana east of Lake Charles.

Great Lakes to Mid Atlantic:
An area of very thin smoke was seen stretching from the lower Great Lakes
from southern Michigan across Lake Erie and northern Ohio southeastward
across southwest Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, Maryland, northern
Virginia and Delaware. This is thought to be remnant smoke from the
numerous agricultural fires in the northern Plains.

WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.

Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.

A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.

Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
