DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z October 28, 2010

No areas of detached smoke or blowing dust could be seen from today's
analysis mostly because of the extensive cloud cover that continued
for another day over the most active fire areas.  These include the
Mississippi River Valley, West Coast of U.S. and British Columbia.
However numerous agricultural fires could be seen through breaks in the
clouds across much of the northwestern U.S./B.C. and across
the Mississippi River Valley.

U.S. West Coast/British Columbia:
A small, thin light dense smoke plume could be seen extending to the
north from a fire in central California.  A second small, thin light
dense smoke plume was observed in satellite imagery from one of the many
fires in southern B.C., spreading eastward from its source.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
