DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z November 11, 2010

No areas of detached smoke or blowing dust observed in imagery through
11/2300Z.


Earlier Today:

Gulf of Mexico
An area of thin, remnant smoke was visible on this morning's imagery
over northeastern and north central Gulf of Mexico.   This smoke can be
attributed to the numerous fires burning in the Gulf Coast states over
the past few days.

Great Lakes/Ontario
Remnant smoke was observed on this morning's imagery over northern
Lake Michigan, eastern Lake Superior and western Lake Huron.  This area
of smoke extends northward through western Ontario toward Hudson Bay.
The smoke can be attributed to the numerous fires burning in the Ohio
River Valley and the Upper Mississippi River Valley over the past
few days.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
