DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z November 20, 2010

Western Texas:
The area of leftover light smoke which was seen in this morning's
satellite imagery moving eastward across the western Texas panhandle
became visible again late this afternoon in GOES-East imagery with
the favorable lower sun angle. The smoke had spread a bit further to
the northeast and was located over north central Texas to the west
and southwest of Wichita Falls and to the south of Childress. This
remnant smoke is attributed particularly to the numerous fires burning
in a relatively small section of north central Mexico yesterday. This
afternoon, many fires again flared up in the same general area of north
central Mexico with more smoke noted moving primarily to the east toward
the Big Bend region of far southwestern Texas.

SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
