DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z November 22, 2010

A significant amount of cloudiness was present across a good portion
of the US today which limited the number of detected fires producing
visible smoke in satellite imagery. A few smoke plumes were observed in
satellite imagery mainly across the Southeast.

New Mexico/Western Texas/Southwestern Oklahoma:
A relatively small thin density streak of blowing dust was observed moving
the northeast from the White Sands region of south central New Mexico
during the afternoon. Several swaths of blowing dust were also visible
moving to the northeast from sources in west Texas between Amarillo
and Midland. The most significant area of blowing dust originated from
a source near Lubbock, TX and reached as far as southwestern Oklahoma
just prior to sunset.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
