DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z January 23, 2011

Gulf of California:
Areas of blowing dust were observed over the northern Gulf of California
and adjacent areas of northwest Mexico this afternoon and evening. The
dust was moving south from a source region in extreme northwest
Sonora state at the top of the Gulf and drifting toward the middle of
the Gulf. Another area of blowing dust, somewhat thicker, was being
generated over west central Sonora along the coastal area and moving to
the east-southeast.

Southeast US:
Numerous, mainly small, smoke plumes associated with agricultural and
prescribe burns were seen over northern Florida, Georgia. South Carolina,
Mississippi and Louisiana this afternoon and evening. Please refer to
the graphic indicated below for details.

SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
