DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z February 13, 2011

Numerous fires were detected across the South Central and Southeastern
US particularly from the Southern Plains to southern Georgia and
northern Florida. Many smoke plumes were also seen in visible satellite
imagery. The most significant smoke plumes were over southern Mississippi
and across south central and southern Texas. Across the western US,
several swaths of blowing dust were evident in satellite imagery moving
to the northeast and originating from point sources (likely dry lake
beds) across northwestern and north central Nevada, extreme northeastern
California, and south central and southeastern Oregon. The thickest
area of blowing dust originated from a source in extreme northeastern
California (Modoc County) and northwestern Nevada (Washoe County),
close to the state border.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
