DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 21, 2011

Southeastern US:
A large area of remnant smoke, moving generally westward throughout the
eastern Gulf of Mexico, was visible in this evening's satellite imagery.
Smoke also remains over much of Florida. This remnant smoke can be
attributed to the numerous agricultural fires burning recently in the
southeastern United States.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
