DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z May 4, 2011

Ohio Valley:
An area of light remnant smoke was seen over the Ohio Valley from southern
Illinois and southern Indiana across much of central Kentucky and north
central Tennessee. This smoke is from the numerous agricultural fires
that were observed yesterday from Kansas and western Missouri northward
into western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota.

Southeast Coast:
Residual light smoke was seen extending from along much of the east
coast of Florida northeastward to an area east of the Outer Banks of
North Carolina. This smoke was being drawn northward ahead of a cold
front moving across eastern North Carolina this morning.

Eastern New Mexico:
A narrow area of very thin remnant smoke was seen over eastern New
Mexico. This is likely smoke from fires in west central New Mexico and
Arizona yesterday.

WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
