DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z June 11, 2011

Central/Eastern U.S./Gulf of Mexico:
Another day of remnant smoke encompassing the eastern two thirds of
the U.S. with smoke stretching from New Mexico/Colorado into the Gulf
of Mexico and the off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Moderately dense smoke
exists through most of New Mexico, Colorado, the Southern Plains and
into the mid-Mississippi Valley. Embedded heavy smoke can be seen
emanating from the Wallow Fire (which remains the main source for the
large area of remnant smoke) through extreme eastern Arizona/New Mexico
and central/eastern Colorado.

A moderately dense band of smoke can be seen along the Gulf coast
and the lower-Mississippi Valley. This is all moving westward and is
from the wildfires currently burning in northern Florida and southern
Georgia. Additionally, the wildfire that has persisted in southern Florida
continues to pump out heavy smoke and a moderately dense band of detached
smoke can be seen moving westward over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The wildfire that has remained over the Cape Hatteras region for several
days now is also adding to an area of moderately dense smoke through
the Mid-Atlantic and off the coast this morning and early afternoon.

Central/Eastern Canada:
A large area of mostly light with some embedded bands of moderately
dense smoke can be seen stretching from western Saskatchewan through
northern Ontario, Hudson Bay and off the eastern coast of Canada. This
is from the numerous fires that are continuing to burn through northern
Alberta and western Saskatchewan.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
