DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z June 14, 2011

Southern Colorado/Southern Arizona/southern New Mexico/northern Mexico:
Several large wildfires (e.g. Wallow, Horseshoe 2) continue to emit
moderately dense to dense smoke that extends northeast across New Mexico
and into north Texas/western Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas. A large
area of mostly thin density aerosol which is believed to contain smoke
covers a good portion of northern Mexico, the Southern and Southeastern
US, and Mid-Atlantic coastal region.

Southeast US:
An area of dense smoke/aerosol over coastal Georgia and Florida
was present as wildfires in that area continue to burn. Some larger
wildfires are also contributing to this general area of smoke including
ones in northern and western Mexico, eastern and southeastern Arizona,
northwestern Texas, southeastern Georgia, northeastern Florida, and far
northeastern North Carolina.

Central/Eastern Canada/Great Lakes Region:
A large region of moderately dense smoke can also be seen over Ontario
and Quebec provinces and extends southward over much of the Great Lakes
region. All of this smoke is from the numerous wildfires that continue
to burn in northeastern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan.

Western and Northwestern Canada:
EARLIER TODAY... An area of light smoke covered much of Yukon and
the Northwestern Territories and extended over northern Alberta and
northwestern Saskatchewan. Some moderate smoke remains present over
Northwest Territories. Late afternoon clouds have prevented further
analysis of smoke transport and density this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
