DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z July 1, 2011

Central United States:
A broad area of smoke covered most of the Central Plains this
morning. Most of the smoke originated from the large wildfires burning
in New Mexico. The smoke covers most of the area from north Texas
northward across the Plains into Nebraska and extends as far east as
Iowa and Missouri. Heavier areas of smoke can be found adjacent to the
fires around Los Alamos, NM.

Carolina Coast/Atlantic Ocean:
The Juniper Road fire in Pender County, NC continues to emit dense smoke
this morning. The smoke generally moved southward along the southern
North Carolina and South Carolina coasts and reached as far south as
Jacksonville, FL. Remnant smoke that was carried onshore with the
afternoon/evening sea breeze yesterday remained over inland counties,
mainly those counties east of Interstate 95.

Gulf Coast:
Moderately dense to locally dense smoke from the Possum Road fire in
Baldwin County, AL continued to move to the south into the Gulf of Mexico
this morning.

Canada:
Dense smoke from fires south of Lake Athabasca along the northern
Alberta/Saskatchewan border continued to move to the east across northern
Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Cloud cover in the region made smoke detection
difficult closer to the point source.

Remnant smoke from a fire near Great Bear Lake extended north of the
lake and approached the Arctic Ocean.

Mexico:
Smoke from the numerous wildfires in northern Mexico continues to move
to the west towards the Gulf of California. Fires and smoke were not
detected in northeastern Mexico due to the clouds and rainfall from the
remnants of TS Arlene.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
