DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z July 23, 2011

Eastern Northwest Territories:
Several wildfires just east of the Great Slave Lake were emitting
moderately dense to dense smoke which moved mainly in a northerly
direction during the day.

Central and Eastern Canada:
At least one patch of wildfires was still active in western Ontario
producing a large area of smoke which moved to the east along the
southern portion of James Bay and over central Quebec. The smoke was
dense closer to the fire, but cloudiness across the region did interfere
with additional smoke density and extent information in satellite imagery.

Central US to Mid-Atlantic States/Northeast and Offshore:
A large area of aerosol was visible in the region stretching from the
Middle Mississippi Valley eastward through the Ohio Valley region to the
Middle Atlantic and the Northeast. The aerosol extended eastward from
there well off the coast over the Atlantic. Given the recent atmospheric
flow and trajectories, it is believed that smoke is not a major component
of this aerosol.

Southwestern US:
Fires in northeastern San Diego County and just south of the border
in extreme northern Baja were emitting moderately dense to dense smoke
which spread to the northeast while thinning out and combining into a
larger plume which moved int extreme southern Nevada and western Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
