DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z August 3, 2011

Eastern US:
An area of remnant smoke from fires in Ontario can be seen off the
north-east coast of the US from Massachusetts south to North Carolina.
The smoke is mainly light with a moderately dense pocket extending from
New Jersey to Massachusetts and out into the Atlantic.

Oregon:
Blowing dust/sand originates from the eastern portion of Summer Lake.
The dust/sand begin blowing at 19:45Z and continues through sunset.
Fires near the Wasco County and Jefferson County border a generating
light to moderately dense smoke which fans out to the east and north
entering southern Washington State.

Canada:
Eastern Ontario continues to host multiple fires which are generating
light to dense smoke. The smoke from these fires is moving southeast
into Minnesota and Lake Superior. A detached area of light to moderately
dense smoke extends north to south through central Ontario and is moving
slowly to the east.

Earlier:
Central and Eastern US:
A large mass of aerosol was visible trapped under the huge upper
level ridge across a good portion of the Central and Eastern US from
the Plains to the Middle Atlantic and Northeast regions. Some light
smoke remnant from small fires last evening is likely mixed in over the
central portion of the country. Larger area of light to medium dense
smoke was moving southeast across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic from
New Hampshire to Eastern Pennsylvania and the northern Chesapeake Bay.
The smoke is remnant from large wildfires in western Ontario and eastern
Manitoba provinces.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
