DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z August 12, 2011

Mid-Atlantic Coast:
An elongated area of unknown aerosol continues to be present off the
US east coast stretching from Florida northeastward along a stationary
front over the western Atlantic. Moderate to dense smoke is observed
moving east off the North Carolina coast from the Lateral West fire
located on the Virginia-North Carolina border.

Southern Louisiana:
An area of moderately dense smoke covers much of southern Louisiana and
part of the Louisiana Gulf coast this evening from a local fire. The
remnant smoke remains confined to the state of Louisiana.

Southern Alberta/Central Montana:
A large area of thin density remnant smoke is wrapped around the low
pressure circulation centered near the southern Alberta-Saskatchewan
border. The remnant smoke, which is observed stretching into southeast
Montana, has likely originated from the recent wildfires in northern
Alberta.

South Central Canada/Great Lakes Region:
Patches of light density smoke are visible over southeast Manitoba,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Lake Superior. This smoke is probably the
result of numerous small fires in the immediate vicinity and also from
the larger wildfires to the east of Great Slave Lake whose remnant smoke
has tracked southeast over the past week.

Northwest Territories:
A relatively small area of moderate to dense smoke is visible near the
wildfires that are located to the east of Great Slave Lake in southeast
Northwest Territories. Thin density remnant smoke is detected only as
far south as the border of Saskatchewan.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
