DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z August 22, 2011

Mid Atlantic Coast:
Clouds covered the Lateral West fire in the Great Dismal Swamp but
there were some breaks in the clouds this afternoon to get a view of
some smoke over the lower Chesapeake Bay with an arm extending east into
the Atlantic off the southeast New Jersey coast. Most of this was light
smoke and slowly shifting to the east.

Florida:
Residual light smoke from a fire in northwest Okeechobee county was seen
lifting to the north northwest through Polk county by late afternoon.

California:
The long running fire in Tulare county in the Sequoia National Park was
producing a light to moderate smoke plume this afternoon/evening that
was lifting to the north across eastern Fresno county into western Mono
and eastern Madera.

Montana/Idaho/Wyoming:
Numerous fires were active again this evening over western Montana
and Idaho. A series of fires over southeast Idaho generated light
to moderately dense plumes that moved to the northeast reaching the
northwest Wyoming border by sunset. A couple of fires over northeast
Idaho near the Montana border had light smoke plumes that were slowly
drifting to the east. A cluster of fires in northwest Montana had light
to moderately dense smoke plumes that were moving to the east. A fire
in Teton county Wyoming in the Teton Nationsl Forest had a dense smoke
plume that was moving to the east into southern Park county.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
