DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z August 22, 2011

Eastern Montana/Dakotas/Wyoming/Nebraska and Colorado:
A fairly large area of mostly light remnant smoke could been in
satellite imagery this morning stretching from the eastern portions of
Montana/Wyoming and northeastern Colorado into North Dakota and western
parts of South Dakota and Nebraska. Some embedded moderately dense smoke
could be seen moving eastward through eastern Wyoming into west-central
South Dakota. This is likely all from the numerous fries that have
continued to burn across Montana/Idaho/Wyoming over the past several days.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
