DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0345Z September 9 2011

Northwest US/Northern High Plains/Southwest Canada:
A large area of smoke was present across most of Oregon, Washington,
Idaho, portions of Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and
Kansas. The smoke also extended northward over southern British Columbia
and through central Alberta. Most of this smoke is from the numerous
large wildfires in Idaho/Montana/Oregon yesterday/today and had become
trapped along an old frontal boundary that reached from Alberta to
Oklahoma. Smoke was moderately dense to dense across western Montana
and central Idaho as well as western Oregon.

Texas/Northern Mexico:
Remnant smoke from several large wildfires in Texas could still be seen
over the south and east portions of Texas, extreme northeast Mexico, and
the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Some areas were of moderate density. This
smoke is generally moving south/southeast. Areas of dense smoke were
also persistent over portions of eastern Texas where fires are still
burning and producing copious amounts of smoke.

Midwest/Central Plains:
Leftover detached smoke mainly from yesterday's agricultural fires over
the Northern Plains and south central Canada was moving to the southwest
across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and into Nebraska by sunset.

South Central Canada:
Light to moderate dense smoke stretched from central Manitoba eastward
across central Ontario. The smoke is remnant from a large fire just
south of Reindeer Lake that continues to burn.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
