DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z September 9 2011

Lake Superior/Michigan/Minnesota/Wisconsin:
Remnant smoke from a wildfire burning south of Reindeer Lake in Canada
is rotating around a mid-level low centered over the Dakotas. Satellite
imagery this morning shows smoke moving from western Ontario into the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Another patch of light smoke dissipated
over central and southern Minnesota as the smoke approached Iowa and
South Dakota. In northern Minnesota, localized moderate to dense smoke
is located in Superior National Forest in Lake County due to the Pagami
Creek fire.

Nevada/Idaho/Montana/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
Numerous wildfires continued to burn overnight in Idaho and Montana.
Remnant smoke from these fires was visible this morning spreading to the
south and west over portions of central Nevada. Smoke also extended
northward through western Montana and into southeastern Alberta and
western Saskatchewan.

Manitoba:
A wildfire burning south of Reindeer Lake in Saskatchewan produced smoke
which moved eastward into neighboring Manitoba.

Oregon/Washington:
Several large wildfires burning in the Cascades Range in Oregon produced
an area of light, remnant smoke in Multnomah, Clackamas, Marion, Linn
and Lane Counties in Oregon along with Clark and Cowlitz Counties
in Washington. An additional wildfire on the Olympic Peninsula is
producing localized areas of moderately dense smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
