DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z September 11 2011
Northwest US/northern US border/southern Canada: Several wildfires in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming continue to burn. A large area of moderate to very dense remnant smoke is observed stretching offshore of and over the Pacific northwest states and across northern Idaho and Montana into southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, and central Ontario. The smoke is most dense in the vicinity of the Cascade range fires in western Oregon and also near the cluster of large fires around the Idaho/Montana border Central Plains: Elongated ribbons of smoke are observed in the central plains and lower Mississippi river valley. Smoke is likely remnant from the wildfire south of Reindeer Lake in Canada along with some contribution from the large wildfires in the Pacific NW. A mid to upper level high pressure system over Arkansas is helping to guide this smoke. Southern Georgia/Northern Florida: Moderately dense smoke was visible this evening in Ware County, Georgia and Baker County, Florida from wildfires in those areas. Smoke plumes primarily traveled north but did not quite reach east central Georgia. Ontario: The wildfire to south of Reindeer Lake in east central Saskatchewan was producing very dense smoke in the east southeast direction this evening. Moderate to thick density smoke extended as far as central Manitoba. Ramirez THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
