DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1900Z March 9, 2012

Southeast US Coast/Gulf of Mexico:
A thin unknown aerosol was present over the western Atlantic this morning
stretching from the Bahamas northeastward ahead of an East Coast frontal
boundary to the Canadian Maritimes. The aerosol could also be seen from
the Bahamas westward across south Florida and the central Gulf of Mexico.

Southern California:
An aerosol seen slowly drifting west and southwest away from southern
California and northern Baja California is thought to be elevated
dust. Strong offshore flow over southern California, Arizona, and northern
Baja California is the likely cause of the dust event.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
