DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1815Z June 3, 2012

Canada:
Remnant smoke from wildfires burning in the Northwest Territories,
Alberta, and Saskatchewan was visible this morning wrapping
around either side of a surface low pressure system lifting through
Saskatchewan. Mainly thin-density smoke was present across the Northwest
Territories into western Nunavut and extended southeastward into Alberta
and Saskatchewan. There was also a thin ribbon of light smoke further
east pushed up against another low pressure system near Lake Ontario
and stretched out across Ontario southward into northern Ohio. Clouds
associated with both low pressure systems hindered additional smoke
detection across Canada this morning.

An additional area of a possible smoke and dust mix could be seen east
of Newfoundland lifting mainly northward.

Southwestern US:
Mainly thin-density, detached smoke could be seen stretching
across the four corner states as well as northwest Mexico, Texas,
and Oklahoma. Most of this smoke can be attributed to the many fires
burning in Sonora/Chihuahua, Mexico and the Baldy-Whitewater fire in New
Mexico. There was also an area of medium-density smoke visible moving
across north-central Texas, likely a result of the Baldy-Whitewater fire.

Gulf of Mexico:
An area of thin-density smoke could be seen along the Louisiana/Texas
Gulf coast this morning. This smoke is likely from the fires burning
across northwest Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
