DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z June 10, 2012

Central and South Central US/Great Lakes/Northeast US:
An extensive area of remnant smoke stretched from extreme northeastern
Mexico/south Texas northeastward to Minnesota/Wisconsin/Lake Michigan
before becoming broken across the Great Lakes. Remnant smoke also existed
from eastern Ontario/southwest Quebec southeast across New York/east
Pennsylvania/New Jersey and off the coast. This remnant smoke is mostly
from large fires burning in several western states, including Colorado/New
Mexico and Arizona, as well as from large fires in northwest Mexico. The
smoke was most dense across north Texas/central Oklahoma/central Kansas.

Colorado/northwest Kansas/southwest Nebraska/north New Mexico:
Moderately dense remnant smoke from the High Park fire in northern
Colorado had spread eastward across southwest Nebraska/northeast
Colorado. Thin smoke also extended across northwest Kansas. In addition,
blowing dust plumes were seen in eastern Colorado and over northwest New
Mexico. Elevated dust particles may have been the aerosol seen moving
from Utah into western Colorado this morning.

East Gulf of Mexico:
An unknown aerosol could be seen moving from east to west across the
eastern Gulf of Mexico. Its origin is not known.

Northwest Canada/Alaska:
Two areas of remnant thin smoke were seen over portions of north
Alberta/north Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories/north British
Columbia/Yukon Territory and east Alaska. These are thought to be mostly
from fires in northern Alberta. In addition, unknown aerosol was seen
across northern Northwest Territories and over part of the Beaufort Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
