DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z July 20, 2012

Mid-Atlantic:
Light-density smoke stretches from North Carolina/Virginia east out
over the Atlantic. The full extend of the smoke to the east is obscured
by clouds. This is likely remnant smoke from the wildfires in Canada.

North-central US:
An area of light-density smoke is centered over Minnesota and Wisconsin.
This is likely remnant smoke from wildfires in Canada.

South Dakota:
A fire has broken out in SW South Dakota and it is generating moderately
dense and dense smoke which is moving to the east.

Alaska:
An area of light to moderate density smoke is situated over southern
Alaska and extends to the south. This may be smoke transported from
Siberia.

Canada:
A large area of light-density smoke is centered over Hudson Bay.
This smoke is likely remnant smoke from the wildfires in Canada.
Another area of smoke can be seen extending from northern Alberta into the
Northwest Territories. This may be smoke being transported from Siberia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
