DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 10, 2012

Northwest US:
Large wildfires in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho continue to
emit moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving to the northeast.

Montana/Southern Canada:
A small area of detached light to moderately dense smoke extends from
mid-Montana, northeast into Saskatchewan. This is likely remnant smoke
from the wildfires in Idaho.

Blowing Dust:
Oregon/California:
There are small areas of blowing dust/sand originating from the dry lakes
beds in Summer Lake, Oregon and Honey Lake, California. The blowing
dust/sand is moving to the northeast. There are two other areas of
blowing dust originating from north-central Nevada and the southeast
corner of Oregon. The blowing dust/sand from these areas is also moving
to the northeast.

FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
