DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z June 25, 2013
Central & Eastern US: An expansive area of remnant light smoke is observed across nearly all of the Northeast, across portions of the Ohio River Valley and farther west over the Central Plains this morning. Cloud cover over much of the Northern Plains and Great Lakes likely prevented the detection of additional remnant smoke. Area of smoke also extends as far south as South Carolina, covering much of the Mid-Atlantic region. Area of smoke is mostly due in part to large wildfires located across the southwestern US. Portions of the smoke over the Northeast US may also be mixed with smoke traveling down from Canada and possibly even farther upstream from Alaska where several large wildfires have been burning. A portion of the smoke over the Central Plains is seen drifting northward over southern Manitoba and southern Ontario provinces of Canada. Canada: From satellite imagery this morning large, separated areas of thin to moderately dense smoke can be seen in-between areas of dense cloud cover over central and northern Canada. One area is located over Quebec and northern Ontario, a second stretched across northwest Manitoba, northern Saskatchewan, southern Nunavut and southern Northwest Territories, a third over northern Northwest Territories, and a fourth along the border of Yukon and B.C. Smoke is coming from numerous wildfires in Alaska, northern Manitoba and portions of Quebec. Alaska: Light to heavy dense smoke is seen in this morning's satellite imagery across most of the state. Numerous wildfires continue to burn and produce smoke. Smoke is seen swirling clockwise and is tracking eastward over northwest Canada.
