DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 28, 2013
Western US/Canada: The Rim Wildfire located in Tuolumne County in central CA continues to produce very dense moving in the north direction. Days old remnant light density smoke, from the Rim fire and other active fires in neighboring states, stretches from central California north northeast into Nevada. Oregon, Idaho, and Washington before turning east over Montana, the Dakotas, and the southern parts of the following Canadian Provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario. Moderate to dense smoke is more localized and only observed in the US Pacific Northwest states. Lower Mississippi River Valley: Numerous agricultural burns are collectively responsible for a light density smoke mass covering the bordering states of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. From Earlier Today.. Plains: Area of haze was detected over mainly the northern and central Plains States around sunrise. Although some residual light smoke may be present, especially over portions of SD, MN and WI, it is believed that sulfates are the more likely cause of most of this haziness. Dust: An area of blowing dust is observed in central Lake County, OR beginning at 2130Z and visible through sunset at 0230Z. The dust originated from the dried up area of Summer Lake and is moving northeast. The dust can be seen as far as southern Crook County, approximately 150km away. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
