DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z March 19, 2014

Dust:

The Southern Plains:
A large area of thick dust plumes, partially obscured by clouds, was
observed moving south-southeast across SE Colorado into W Kansas, the
panhandle of Texas, and NE New Mexico from approximately 1700Z until
sunset. A fire located just east of Canadian, TX (near the border of OK)
is producing a smoke plume moving eastward along with the flow of the
dust around 2015Z until sunset.

Another large separate dust event was detected moving from the eastern
New Mexico border eastward into central Texas and Kansas. The plumes
are first visible at 1745Z and continue moving eastward until sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
