DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z April 16, 2014

Smoke:
Great Lakes:
Remnant smoke from large prairie fires across E KS from last night has
been vertically transported and mixed with Asian dust/smoke transported
over the last few weeks ahead of cyclone in SD. The smoke is very
light and is only detected at very oblique sun angle from GOES-West,
but is currently seen coming from the eastern edge of the cirrus of the
cyclone across Lake Michigan across the eastern portion of the UP and
all of the LP of Michigan, extreme northern IL, IN and NW OH, before
becoming too difficult to determine location due to GOES-West parallax.
All appears to be moving due East, attm.

Unknown (likely smoke):
Missouri/Iowa:
A very narrow, approximately 30km wide, N-S oriented band of unknown
aerosols can be seen only using GOES-West, due to oblique sun angle
in early morning. This extends from as far south as Cole county, MO
to about Washington county, IA... through breaks in clouds. Loop of
visible imagery clearly shows elements moving north within this feature in
agreement with sfc and boundary layer winds. It is likely the band is
related to smoke from prairie fires in KS, but this cannot be confirmed,
though it is clearly not fog or other clouds.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
