DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 6, 2014

SMOKE:
Gulf of Mexico:
A large plume of light-density smoke is visible moving NW from offshore
Mexico into the Western Gulf of Mexico offshore of Texas. This remnant
smoke originates from the agricultural burns that have been taking place
in Mexico and central America.

Great Lakes:
An crescent-shaped swath of light-density smoke is visible moving eastward
from Quebec over Lake Superior over Michigan and Lake Michigan. This
remnant smoke originates from the Funny River wildfire that burned over
a week ago in Alaska.

Northern Plains:
An area of light-density smoke is visible moving SE extending from North
Dakota into Minnesota and South Dakota. This remnant smoke could be the
smoke that was mentioned moving south this morning, but could also be
a mixture of blowing dust from Asia.

Hudson Bay:
An area of light-density smoke is visible moving SE this evening in Quebec
over the Hudson Bay. This remnant smoke originates from the Funny River
wildfire that burned over a week ago in Alaska.

BLOWING DUST:
Alaska:
A large area of blowing dust is visible making landfall onto the
western face of Alaska via the Chukchi Sea. The origins of this dust
is Siberian. The plumes are first visible at 1700Z and continues until
sunset.

AEROSOLS:
Southeast:
An area of unknown aerosols are visible off the SE state coast. An area of
haze is visible moving offshore from North Carolina south to Florida. The
plume is first visible around 1400 and continues until sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE...TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING
DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPECTION
OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED
TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
