DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1400Z July 1, 2014
SMOKE: New Mexico: A large fire complex in southern Rio Arriba County of north central New Mexico has resulted in an area of residual light to isolated moderately dense smoke across much of eastern New Mexico. West-Central Canada/Montana/Wyoming/Nebraska: Residual smoke from the numerous wildfire complexes mainly across the NW Territories of western Canada extended southward into portions of Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska with the most dense smoke near the source region and in southeastern Alberta. Newfoundland/Atlantic Ocean: Light remnant smoke from the Boreal Quebec fire a few days ago with contributions from the far SW Labrador/Quebec border fire was seen exiting Newfoundland. An area of aerosol farther south off the US Northeast coast was believed to be largely sulfates but some remnant smoke from these fires may also be present. DUST: Gulf of Mexico/Central US Gulf Coast: A well defined moderately dense Saharan Air Layer was still seen across the western and central Gulf of Mexico, the eastern third of Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. Dust was becoming entrained in the circulation of Tropical Depression One off the east coast of Florida. THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
