DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 13, 2014
Areas of moderately dense to thick smoke continued to be emitted from wildfires over British Columbia in southwestern Canada and over the Northwest Territories and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan in northwestern Canada. Residual smoke of varying degrees of thickness extended from southwestern British Columbia northeast to the Northern Territories and then southeast into the southern Plains of the US. Gulf Coast States: An area of aerosol of unknown composition was located across southern Texas eastward across the northern Gulf of Mexico. Alaska: An area of aerosol...possibly residual smoke from fires over Russia...extended in a narrow ribbon along the North Slope of Alaska into extreme northwestern Canada. THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
