DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z June 6 2016

SMOKE:
Arizona/Northwest Mexico:
Wildfires in central Arizona continue to produce smoke this morning
with remnant thin smoke extending from southern Utah south and southeast
through north and east Arizona, west and southwest New Mexico, and far
western Texas. Additional thin to moderately dense smoke can be seen
across northwestern Mexico and the Gulf of California. In addition to
the Arizona wildfires, numerous fires in the mountainous regions of
northwest Mexico have led to the excess smoke.

Northern Plains/Midwest:
Light residual smoke is seen moving southeast through portions of
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and South
Dakota. The source region of this smoke is likely fire activity that
is over northern Alberta.

Alaska:
Remnant smoke likely from fire activity over Siberia could be seen
drifting southward across northwestern Alaska. A few active wildfires
in Alaska had also produced remnant smoke that has wrapped southward
and then westward across west Alaska and the Aleutians back towards the
Kamchatka Peninsula. A small patch of thin smoke was also present just
south of the Aleutians near Kodiak Island.

DUST:
Southeast US/Eastern Gulf/East Coast:
A significant amount of dust that is likely Saharan in nature can be seen
across the central and eastern Gulf, off the Southeast US, and stretching
northward through a band of clouds along the Eastern Seaboard off the
coast of New England. The dust is being pulled northward by Tropical
Storm Colin.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
