DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z April 30, 2017
SMOKE: Area from the Western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche to the South Central US... A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke from the ongoing seasonal fires occurring in southeastern Mexico and Central America extended from the Bay of Campeche northward across the western half of the Gulf of Mexico to at least as far north as the coastal area of southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana. It is possible that the smoke extends much farther inland to the north though widespread cloudiness is greatly hindering smoke detection from satellite imagery. Mid Atlantic Coast to the Western Atlantic.... A west to east elongated relatively narrow swath of possible leftover smoke from the seasonal burning in Mexico and Central America as well as from the West Mims fire extended from the Maryland/Delaware/southern New Jersey coast eastward over a portion of the western Atlantic. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
