DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z July 27, 2017

SMOKE:
Alaska...
A patch of light density remnant smoke was visible over central Alaska
covering much of the northeastern quadrant of the state this morning. A
few number of wildfires continue to burn in the area.

South-Central Canada and Northern US...
A large area of primarily thin density smoke covered a good portion of
central and southern Canada as well as the northern part of the US from
the Pacific Northwest to the western Great Lakes region. This remnant
smoke was attributed mainly to wildfire activity near the Montana/Idaho
border and the wildfires located in southern British Columbia. Localized
moderately dense smoke was visible in the area around the fires in
British Columbia. An area of moderately dense smoke was also detected
stretched across northern Alberta.

Northern California and Oregon....
Light density smoke produced from the Orleans Complex located in
northwestern California is producing an area of thin density smoke that
was seen to extend into central Oregon.

DUST:
Gulf of Mexico....
Saharan Dust was visible predominantly off of Louisiana's coast, extending
into the Central Gulf of Mexico. The general direction of the blowing
dusting is towards the west.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
